Death of a Singing Diva

You cried out to us through your songs Your life played out before us As if you had a choice in the matter We saw you slowly crumble, Sometimes stumble, Many times mumble, As we watched with bated breath It seemed as if you had it all Beauty, Money, Fame, And that voice, Spun like silk Could have made angels cry Much too young to die so soon We were supposed to be given many more years by way of your lyrics But now you’re gone The world loved you more than you loved yourself You loved your addiction more than anything else Eventually you allowed it to exhume you Steal your soul First comes the rise Then the fall It’s always harder when you’re coming down Especially off that smack high,  crack high,  alcohol or prescription high Are You a Billy Holiday Or a Marilyn Monroe How about a Whitney Houston A Janice Joplin perhaps An Amy Winehouse for sure All of whom sang the Blues Begging to be rescued Underlying mes...

Women and Thyroid Cancer: A Growing Concern

This past week Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and  he mentioned  that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental x-rays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around  your neck. Many dentists don't bother to use it. Also, there is something called a "thyroid guard" for use during mammograms.   A friend of mine who had also viewed the show mentioned that she had just had her yearly mammogram. Although she felt a little silly, she asked about the guard and sure enough, the technician had one in a drawer. She asked why it wasn't routinely used. The Answer the technician gave: "I don't know. You have to ask for it." Well, if she hadn't seen the show,  how would she have known to ask? We need to pass this o...

This Is Your Brain On Protein...

Most of us are familiar with the fact that proteins help build and repair muscles after they are broken down after an intense workout and are necessary for strong bones, skin, hair, and blood.  What many do not know, is that proteins are also essential to the capacity in which your brain functions. During a meeting a colleague turned to me and said that she could tell the difference between how sharp her mind is when she has her protein in the morning in comparison to when she doesn’t eat her protein in the morning.  Basically her brain needs a jump start every morning via protein.     What happens after eating a breakfast that is high in protein is that is raises the tyrosine levels in the brain which in turn causes the brains neurons to produce norepinephrine and dopamine.  As a result these neurotransmitters (norepinephrine and dopamine) increase alertness and brain activity. It is the neurotransmitters that allow your brain to network and communica...

In The RAW!

What’s up with People who eat Raw Foods?  What’s the scoop on the Raw Food Diet? If you are a novice to the raw food diet, here are some tidbits of information to help you get acclimated. Raw means unprocessed or uncooked. Rawism or the practice of eating uncooked or unprocessed food it the most healthy way of eating simply because the food is in it’s natural state. Cooking vegetables will deplete it of the nutrients that our bodies need the most. By eating in this manner you are going to be in optimal health. Eating a raw food diet will cause a leaner body, a clearer complexion, more energy and a reduced disease state, and weight loss.  Overall people who practice rawism look different, for they do not experience the normal signs of aging as quickly and you may also notice youthfulness within the eyes. If you decide that rawism is something that you would like to try then some of the foods that you should expect to eat would be: Seaweed Whole G...

REVIEW: FELA THE MUSICAL

Image
FELA "THE MUSICAL" If I could describe it in just word,  I couldn't!  It is everything you would expect from the producers Will and Jada Pinkett, Jay Z and the Hendels .  If you know anything about FELA, or if you know nothing, you will leave this production enlightened! For it is a fully aesthetic learning experience Electrifying!  And the best thing is the fact that is interactive, which kept the audience fully engaged.  You will Dance, you will sing, you will clap, you will repeat sayings in Swahili,  You will be fully immersed in the Nigerian Culture, if only for an evening!  The Shrine will never forever take it's place in history.  Oh, did I mention the Dancers?   You have to give it up for Choreographer Bill T. Jones . I'd like to know how Sahr Ngaujar  who so perfectly depicted  the Nigerian Musical Genius Fela Anikulapo-Kuti came out of nowhere to play this role. His orator, acting, saxophone playing, and ...
