Why Good Friday?

Image
Holy Week is nearing a close and today is Good Friday, 3 days before Easter, the day in which Jesus was resurrected from the dead. For many years even though I call myself a Christian, I never really understood why.  As I attended my first Good Friday Service, it helped me to put things into perspective and gave me clarity to some unanswered questions. Why do we sacrifice something during Lenten season, and attend Good Friday services at noon? What's with the Hot Cross buns? Without sounding too "preachy", I would like to give my take on it.  Traditionally speaking, it is the Day when Jesus was crucified, dead and buried. Between the hours of noon and 3:00pm he was nailed to the cross. Most of us now the story of how he rode though the city of Jerusalem on a donkey that until then had never been ridden. Previously everyone shouted "Save Us"!  but on this day they shouted "Crucify Him"! Not knowing that the only way to be saved, was through the Cro...

Kuumba Divine Jewelry

Image
Kuumba means "Creativity", and as my featured artist, her Jewelry line is nothing short of it's name, "Kuumba Divine Jewelry" Ever since I have known Kuumba she has been making jewelry. It must have started from the lack of eccentricity in the necklaces, earrings and bracelets that she refused to purchase during the 90's. There had to be something better out there, but there wasn't, and so it began. Being the inner hippie that she is, she always had the need to add her own creative Kuumba touch to the universe.  Years later in 2002 Kuumba Divine Jewelry was born. As the sole Founder/Owner/Designer, she has created from hand, fine jewelry that is so authentic that it can immediately be identified as a Kuumba Divine design when you see it.  Her fine jewelry line is clearly inspired by things that exist in nature, such as the wings of a butterfly, the bark of a tree or even the shape of an avocado. Additionally, the earthly metals and rare stones ...

Rescued Child

Yesterday as I left work, walking to my parking lot I noticed a little boy who appears to be about 5 years old. He walked out of the Victoria Secret store and was wandering aimlessly down the street. I observed his behavior and my instinct kicked in that something was just not right. I walked to catch up to him and asked him "where is your mommy?" He turned and looked at me puzzled and attempted to keep walking. I stopped him again and asked the same question.  "Where is your mommy?" I was hoping she was in the Victoria Secret store I'd seen him just walk out of and that at any moment she'd come out and snatch his hand, like we mothers do when we feel our child has gone too far away from us. Instead he responded, "in a hotel." I responded, repeating what he said "a hotel?" He says "Yes, a Hospital hotel." Now I am puzzled, but know that it could be a possibility since we were are about 3 blocks from the medical center. At that m...

The Meat We Eat

The Hot Pocket tainted meat recall is just the latest that we have heard about tainted and diseased meat being sold to consumers.   I guarantee you though it will not be the last. Although I was not so surprised when it happened, many wonder how it could have happened. What has been not been made extremely public is the fact that carcasses from around 28,000 diseased animals are sold to caterers and food processors every year. From that, the meat finds its way into schools, prisons, hospitals and the military, or is used in products such as pies and pastries. For example, meat from slaughtered cattle is sold with no warning to processors or consumers that it comes from a TB-infected herd. In other words, once it passes as being “fit for human consumption” it does not need to be marked, and can therefore be sold with all other meats without additional labeling. Just a week ago Rancho Feeding Corp. of Petaluma, CA recalled close to 9 million pounds of meat, because th...

From the Mother of a Young Black Son

Until now, I have been silent because I have not been able to get my emotions in check since the Jordan Davis verdict.  Another young black child, with a promising future has been slaughtered at the hands of a white man, who claims he “felt” that his life was in danger of being harmed by a young black male.  All under the “Stand your ground” law which says that you can provoke an encounter and still use lethal means to defend yourself.  This is basically justified murder, which in some cases encourages an open season against the young black male. This law has a stark resemblance to the “Casual Killing Act of 1669, which states that a slave can be killed by his master, and that the slave’s death shall not be accompanied by a felony. Jordan and Trayvon are not the only children that have died in such “Stand Your Ground” cases.  In Florida alone at least 26 children or teens have fallen victim as result of this abominable law. We are seeing this same scenario repea...
